Job Summary The Liberty County Board of Commissioners is accepting applications for the position of part-time Communications Officer (CO) Trainee within the 9-1-1 Communications department.
Communication Officers are responsible for taking emergency calls and providing assistance to emergency and non-emergency callers, while keeping units updated and safe when en-route to a call.
Selected applicants will be enrolled in an on-site training program to gain the required skills and knowledge to competently perform CO duties.
Successfully completion of training will lead to full-time status working 12-hour shifts.
The hiring process starts with a testing phase for reading comprehension, hearing comprehension, spelling, and typing.
Applicants passing the testing phase will be invited to an interview.

Major Job Duties Answers emergency and routine telephone calls Determines appropriate service to respond; provides life- saving medical instructions to callers over the phone Enters caller information into Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) Provides logistic support for public safety field activities as necessary Operates state-of-the-art radio console, telephone, CAD systems and other computer programs and applications Dispatches appropriate public safety units (police, fire, emergency medical services) and monitors progress of the call; records times and other information regarding the call Receives requests via radio and phone from public safety units and monitors the progress; records times and other information regarding the requests Responds to requests from general public for information concerning full range of available public services; routes calls to appropriate departments Operates terminals for GCIC/NCIC; enters and extracts data needed; maintains dissemination log Knowledge, Skills, and Minimum Qualifications KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED Computers, job-related software programs, and current office practices and procedures Federal, state, local laws, county ordinances, as they apply to our department, and department policies and procedures Understanding of the principles and practices of emergency and non-emergency communications operations Emergency codes and signals Regulations and procedures of state and national crime information centers County geography, including road and street names Communications equipment User agencies operations/terminology, CAD, and medical terminology Dispatch procedures MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Eighteen (18) years of age High school graduate or equivalent Ability to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays No felony convictions No misdemeanor convictions sufficient to establish a pattern of disregard for the law SKILLS REQUIRED Ability to type a minimum of 30 words per minute Ability to pass job testing Oral and written communication Using standard office equipment Interpersonal communication and relations Multi-tasking Quick decision making with little information from callers Physical Demands Typically performed at a desk while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, or stooping.
Occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and distinguishes between shades of color.
Typically performed in an office and in a very noisy place.
Salary & Benefits While in training, CO Trainees work a part-time schedule at an hourly rate $16.
98 (Grade 10A).
After successful completion of training and you are able to work independently, the hourly rate increases to $17.
84 (Grade 11A) and the position becomes full-time with benefits working 12-hour shifts.
Upon successful completion of a probationary period, the hourly rate increases to $18.
74 (Grade 12A).
